Meet our Founder
Amy grew up on Alabama’s Gulf Coast, swimming, fishing, and exploring the rivers and delta surrounding Mobile Bay. She brings a deep love and appreciation for the natural world to her work as an educator, and hopes to inspire her students to love the natural world as well.
Amy began her journey into education by questioning the conventional system and diving deep into the world of self-directed education and unschooling. She eventually found her educational home in the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori, who was committed not only to nurturing children’s independence and curiosity, but also to their spiritual and psychological development.
Amy brings to her teaching a background in fine art, a deep interest in agriculture and food systems, and a love of the outdoors. She wholeheartedly believes that meaningful learning requires warm, supportive relationships as well as direct experience with the real world. It has long been Amy’s dream to create a space where children can learn, play, explore, and be challenged in an environment that is joyful and engaging.
Wildwood Field School is the culmination of nearly 15 years of experience learning, questioning, and imagining a better way to educate children.
